How internships will ruin our careers.

Do you agree?

I’m not sure I agree with this assessment on internships.  Still pondering it.  Your thoughts?

  1. I do agree to an extent. I feel thus is more true with corporate internships. Those companies that pay are looking for good employees to keep on. Those that don’t pay are most likely looking for free labor. In our case it’s different. We are not full time interns only. We have other jobs. I have two friends from college majoring in business that had several internships. The girl that was paid did get hired. The other one had three internships and was not even considered for a position at two of the companies. I think it’s just a chance you take when you sign on for an internship. If nothing else it looks good on your resume.

  2. I don’t agree. The purpose of an internship is to gain experience and network with individuals in the area you wish to start a profession in. Regardless if the internship is paid or unpaid I believe that the individual needs to make the most out of the experience. And with any career you go into you need to start from the bottom and work your way up. If starting from the bottom means that you need to be an assistant and do grunt work then so be it. Just make sure you go above and beyond the call of duty. When you do that you are showing initiative and you are showing the employer that you are willing to do whatever you can to advance in your career.
